🌟 MLK Day Camp: Trash to Treasure

$175.00

A Day of Service — Caring for Community, Caring for Earth

9am-3pm at 237 Hancock Street, Brooklyn, NY 11216, with walk to Stars of Hope Community Garden and Von King Park (weather permitting)
For 2nd to 6th grade students

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, children will spend a joyful, hands-on day learning that service matters, and everyone can help make their community better.

At our Trash to Treasure MLK Day Camp, kids become community helpers, environmental stewards, and creative makers. Inspired by Dr. King’s belief that “everybody can be great, because everybody can serve,” this camp blends service, environmental justice, art-making, and collaboration into a meaningful day of learning and action.

As part of their service work, children will actively help clean and care for the Stars of Hope Community Garden and the green space next to the baseball field at Von King Park (weather permitting). They’ll learn why these shared spaces matter, who uses them, and how taking responsibility for public places strengthens the whole community. They will use gloves, garbage-picking tools, and metal detectors to find cool stuff and clean up the park! Campers will also visit the nearby historic magnolia tree—a powerful example of how community action can protect the environment for generations.

Back in our maker space, children will transform safe, cleaned, found materials into art, garden objects, and messages of community pride. Children will also help prepare and cook lunch together, practicing teamwork, shared responsibility, and learning how cooking and eating together is another way we care for our community.

This camp is perfect for children who love to explore, create, and help—and for families who value community, justice, and environmental learning.

🕊️ Service • Creativity • Environmental Justice • Hope in Action

Led by the experienced teaching teams from Edible Anarchy and Brooklyn Rewilders, this is a special MLK Day experience that is purposeful, empowering, and deeply joyful.
