Welcome to the Brooklyn Rewilders & Edible Anarchy STEAM Gardening & Cooking Class at Arts & Letters United school!

Our Winter 2026 Class meets Thursday, January 8 to March 26 from 2:40-4:30 pm inside the school

We will take winter garden walks and work inside our classroom studying seeds, hydroponics, and more!

Grades: PreK through 2nd Grade
Location: Arts & Letters United School & Garden (near the early childhood playground on Madison)
Schedule: Every Thursday

Let’s dig in! Winter Seed Starters is a joyful afterschool adventure that blends gardening, cooking, and nature play for our youngest learners. Designed for PreK through 2nd-grade children (we work on different projects based on age), this hands-on program introduces foundational gardening and culinary concepts through the lens of curiosity and the five senses. From digging in the dirt, listening to the sap inside trees with stethoscopes, to planting seeds for our spring garden, tasting garden-grown snacks, and dressing up as pollinators, children explore the natural world through play, movement, storytelling, and food.

Each week, students engage in interactive garden-based activities like building hydroponic gardens, starting seeds for our school garden, growing and harvesting herbs, and creating nature art—paired with simple, healthy food projects they can proudly share. Along the way, they develop early science skills, build social-emotional confidence, and gain a deeper understanding of where food comes from.

Program Highlights:

  • Sensory-rich garden scavenger hunts, color hunts, and taste tests

  • Cooking activities like pesto, pickles, seed muffins, and fermented breads like dosa

  • Gentle harvesting, seed planting, and weather tracking

  • Storytime picnics and music

By the end of the semester, Garden Explorers will:
🌱 Show curiosity and care for plants and living things
👃 Use their five senses to describe and explore the garden
🤝 Practice cooperation, routine, and group storytelling
🍓 Learn basic food prep skills and build positive food experiences

Join us this fall as we grow, cook, play, and discover—together!

All children will receive journal notebooks for the semester and supplies to complete each lesson, as well as reusable glass jars and food to take home.

The semester will end with a shared feast for families, grown and cooked by our class!

Class mostly meets inside the school, with daily walks to the school garden, weather permitting.

Snacks provided. Scholarships are available.

Please contact us with any questions! You can learn more about our nonprofit project Brooklyn Rewilders on our website! We can’t wait to learn together!
