1st & 2nd Grade | Urban Farmers: Gardening & Cooking Afterschool Program

$600.00

Our Fall 2025 Class meets Wednesday, September 10 to December 17 from 2:40-4:30pm

We will walk the children to the garden from their classrooms, and pickup is at the School Garden on Madison, near the early childhood playground.

Grades: 1st & 2nd
Location: Arts & Letters United Garden
Schedule: Fall 2025 | 1 Weekly Session | 160 minutes each

Dig deeper, grow stronger! Urban Farmers is a dynamic afterschool program that blends science, gardening, and hands-on culinary skills for curious 1st & 2nd graders. Rooted in inquiry and collaboration, this program cultivates a deeper understanding of how food is grown, how ecosystems thrive, and how we can nourish ourselves and our communities—one garden bed and recipe at a time.

Each week, students engage in project-based outdoor learning: planting, harvesting, composting, and preparing real food from the garden. They’ll track weather, measure plant growth, observe soil life, and build their own garden journals—all while learning to safely slice, mix, and prep healthy dishes. This real-world curriculum is designed to connect kids with science, nature, and each other.

Program Highlights:

Journal-based science exploration and nature observations

Simple, delicious cooking projects using garden-grown ingredients

Composting, pollinator awareness, and garden system problem-solving

End-of-season community market and garden celebration with families

By the end of the semester Urban Farmers will:
🌱 Apply observation and problem-solving skills in a living outdoor classroom
🥕 Prepare simple, nutritious recipes while learning food safety and cooking basics
🌻 Collaborate to care for shared space, solve garden challenges, and celebrate growth
📊 Practice early STEM skills through weather tracking, measurement, and data collection

This is hands-on, hearts-in learning at its best. Let’s grow something great together!

All children will receive journal notebooks for the semester and supplies to complete each lesson, as well as reusable glass jars and food to take home.

The semester will end with a shared feast for families, grown and cooked by our class!

Class mostly meets outside in our school garden, with a tented area in case of rain.

Snacks provided. Scholarships are available.
