Our Fall 2025 Class meets Thursday, September 11 to December 18 from 2:40-4:30pm
We will walk the children to the garden from the blacktop, and pickup is at the United School Garden on Madison, near the early childhood playground.
Grades 3–5
Location: Arts & Letters United Garden
Schedule: Fall 2025 | 1 Weekly Session | 160 minutes each
Step into the garden as scientist, chef, and steward! In this immersive afterschool program, upper elementary students dive into the science of growing food and the joy of cooking with it. Through weekly hands-on sessions, young gardeners will explore soil science, plant anatomy, pollinators, weather tracking, and global food traditions—all while building culinary confidence and teamwork.
Each week blends real-world STEM learning with seasonal cooking activities, like making solar oven nachos, pickled veggie slaw, or dumplings inspired by international harvests. Students will take on rotating garden roles, keep observation journals, and culminate the program with a family celebration and community share-out.
Program Highlights:
Explore food science concepts like photosynthesis, soil health, seed germination, and preservation.
Learn safe knife skills, basic recipe development, and kitchen tool use.
Cook and taste-test dishes made with seasonal, garden-grown ingredients.
Track weather, plant growth, and pollinator visits using real data and journals.
By the end of the semester, Garden Chefs will:
🥕 Prepare a variety of healthy snacks and simple meals using ingredients they helped grow.
🍽️ Confidently prepare simple, nourishing meals they can recreate for their families at home.
🌿 Understand the science behind plant growth, soil nutrients, and ecological balance.
📚 Keep a detailed garden journal with drawings, measurements, and recipe notes.
🌍 Demonstrate awareness of global food traditions and sustainability practices.
🍲 Use child-safe kitchen tools to chop, measure, and mix with confidence.
🧠 Connect science, math, and storytelling through cooking, harvesting, and garden exploration.
Perfect for curious minds ready to dig deeper, chop smarter, and grow together!
All children will receive journal notebooks for the semester and supplies to complete each lesson, as well as reusable glass jars and food to take home.
The semester will end with a shared feast for families, grown and cooked by our class!
Class mostly meets outside in our school garden, with a tented area in case of rain.
Snacks provided. Scholarships are available.
