PS 282 School | PreK & Kindergarten | Garden Explorers: STEM Gardening & Cooking Afterschool Program
Our Brooklyn Rewilders Fall 2025 Class meets Wednesday, September 17 to December 17 from 2:30-5pm
Grades: PreK & K
Location: PS 282 School Garden
Schedule: Every Wednesday, except school holidays
Let’s dig in! Garden Explorers is a joyful afterschool adventure that blends gardening, cooking, and nature play for our youngest learners. Designed for preK & Kindergarten children, this hands-on program introduces foundational gardening and culinary concepts through the lens of curiosity and the five senses. From digging in the dirt and planting seeds to tasting garden-grown snacks and dressing up as pollinators, children explore the natural world through play, movement, storytelling, and food.
Each week, students engage in interactive garden-based activities like building bug hotels, harvesting herbs, and creating nature art—paired with simple, healthy cooking projects they can proudly share. Along the way, they develop early science skills, build social-emotional confidence, and gain a deeper understanding of where food comes from.
Program Highlights:
Sensory-rich garden scavenger hunts, color hunts, and taste tests
Cooking activities like soil parfait and garden pesto
Gentle harvesting, seed planting, and weather tracking
Storytime picnics, music, and art projects
By the end of the semester, Garden Explorers will:
🌱 Show curiosity and care for plants and living things
👃 Use their five senses to describe and explore the garden
🤝 Practice cooperation, routine, and group storytelling
🍓 Learn basic food prep skills and build positive food experiences
Join us this fall as we grow, cook, play, and discover—together!
All children will receive supplies to complete each lesson, as well as some reusable glass jars and food to take home.
The semester will end with a shared feast for families!
Class mostly meets outside in our school garden, with a tented area in case of rain.
Snacks provided.
Scholarships are available! We offer tiered pricing through 9/5 to help fund our scholarships.
Please contact us with any questions! We can’t wait to learn together!
