PS 282 School | 1st through 5th Grade | Winter Wonderland: STEAM-Based Nature & Cooking Afterschool Program
Our Brooklyn Rewilders Winter 2026 Class meets Wednesday, January 6 to March 25 from 2:30-5pm
Grades: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th Graders
Location: PS 282 School Garden
Schedule: Every Wednesday, except school holidays
Let’s dig in! Winter Wonderland is a joyful afterschool adventure that blends gardening, cooking, art, and nature play for our youngest learners. Designed for 1st through 5th-grade children (we work on different projects based on age), this hands-on program introduces foundational gardening and culinary concepts through the lens of curiosity and the five senses. From digging in the dirt and listening to the winter sap inside trees with stethoscopes to planting seeds for our spring garden, tasting garden-grown snacks, and dressing up as pollinators, children explore the natural world through play, movement, storytelling, and food.
Each week, students engage in interactive garden-based activities like building hydroponic gardens, starting seeds for our school garden, growing and harvesting herbs, and creating nature art—paired with simple, healthy food projects they can proudly share. Along the way, they develop early science skills, build social-emotional confidence, and gain a deeper understanding of where food comes from.
Schedule: 2:40-5 pm | School garden and inside classroom
Program Highlights:
Sensory-rich garden scavenger hunts, color hunts, and taste tests
Cooking activities like pesto, pickles, seed muffins, and fermented breads like dosa
Gentle harvesting, seed planting, and weather tracking
Storytime picnics and music
By the end of the semester, Garden Explorers will:
🌱 Show curiosity and care for plants and living things
👃 Use their five senses to describe and explore the garden
🤝 Practice cooperation, routine, and group storytelling
🍓 Learn basic food prep skills and build positive food experiences
Join us this fall as we grow, cook, play, and discover—together!
All children will make journal notebooks for the semester and get supplies to complete each lesson, as well as reusable glass jars and food to take home.
Class mostly meets inside the school, with daily walks to the school garden, weather permitting.
Snacks provided. Scholarships are available.
We offer sliding scale tuition with a limited number of community-rate spots. Please choose the price point that works best for your family. If you're able to pay the full rate, we encourage you to do so—it helps us continue offering scholarships and reduced rates to families who need them. You can also make a tax-deductible donation here to support accessible programming for all.
Please contact us with any questions! You can learn more about our nonprofit project Brooklyn Rewilders on our website! We can’t wait to learn together!
